Last week, I began to give some examples of biblical
prophecies regarding the Messiah, which are especially useful for witnessing to
the Jewish people. Today, I want to share the prophecy from Jeremiah 31:31-34:
Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will
make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Not
according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took
them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they
brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the Lord: But this shall be
the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith
the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their
hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. And they shall
teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know
the Lord: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest
of them, saith the Lord: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember
their sin no more.
Some time ago, I decided to distribute this
scripture in the market square someplace in Israel. I photocopied the text from
a Jewish bible, highlighted the phrase “new covenant” - ברית
חדשה – which is synonymous with “New
Testament” in Hebrew, and started handing it out to the passersby. Many of
them, after glancing at the paper in their hands, returned it to me, and claimed
that they didn’t want to read “stuff from the New Testament”.
It took a few moments to explain to them that it was not taken from the New Testament, but from the Tanach; some still refused to read it, but others were intrigued.
It is one of those scriptures whose existence a lot of Jewish people prefer to forget…
I find it a very useful prophecy to quote when
witnessing to Jews...
Stay blessed, my beloved, and stay tuned...
