Is Satan really ugly?

When I watch television or movies, especially children’s shows, I notice that the villains almost always look evil… Our culture is full of stereotypes, and they always seem to portray the difference visually. You look at the characters, and can immediately tell who the good guys are, and who the bad guys are.

But is it really wise?

I don’t think so. I think it is intentional. Perhaps the people who do it are not aware of it, but they are serving a sinister purpose…

Think about it; children grow up believing that if someone is beautiful on the outside, then they must be beautiful on the inside. Whenever they meet a good-looking person, they trust them… They expect the bad people to look nasty and mean.

But we know better than that. In fact, look at Satan – Lucifer. He was a beautiful angel – some even claim that he was the most beautiful of angels. Ezekiel 28:12-15 tells us:

Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord God; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.

Evil?

And on the other hand, look at Jesus. Isaiah 53:1-2 tells us:

Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed? For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.

That is exactly the point! If we are taught to accept physical beauty as a sign of righteousness, and unattractiveness as a sign of evil, then we are in great danger of being tricked by Satan. If “there is no beauty that we should desire”, then we are at risk of being confused, and not recognizing the real quality within…

In other words, Satan – being beautiful – is trying to fool us into following him, rather than Jesus – who, according to scripture, has “no form nor comeliness”.

Physical beauty is a vanity. The “good guys” aren’t always handsome, and the “bad guys” aren’t always unsightly. The sooner you teach your children that, the better…

Stay blessed, and stay tuned,
