Casting stones

Lately, I have encountered a lot of headlines about Christian organizations and individuals condemning others for their sins. It appears as if condemning others for their sins is considered to be a sign of righteousness by many...

But is it really?

Let us observe what the Bible has to say about that:

In Matthew 7:1-5 Jesus teaches us:

Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?

Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.

Furthermore; Jesus gave us a clear example of his opinion regrading us judging others. In John 8:1-11, we find the following account:

Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.

And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?

This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.

So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.

And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.

And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.

When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?

She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

Although this woman clearly broke one of the ten commandments, Jesus taught us that it was not up to us to condemn her...

There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?                           James 4:12

Everybody sins!

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.             Romans 3:23

But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.            Isaiah 64:6

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.           Ephesians 2:8-9

Let us follow the clear example given to us by Jesus. Condemnation is found everywhere; what this world needs is love and mercy. Let us be true followers of Christ, and let us shine his light wherever we go...

Stay blessed, and stay tuned,
